Arrival seems to mark the culmination of ABBA’s early, innocent days, wherein they perfected their own particular Seventies take on the most melodic and hummable Sixties pop music, conveying their unique view of what modern popular music may sound like and be about.

Arrival was their fourth studio album but the first to forge an identity in tandem with its introduction of their soon-to-be iconic trademark reversed B logo. Its three predecessors-1973’s Ring Ring, 1974’s Waterloo, and 1975’s ABBA-had been a series of costume-changing forays and false-starts through folk-rock, glam, light ballads, and novelty rock‘n’roll. At their best, as on Arrival, ABBA are as mysteriously out-there as Bowie, as rococo as Phil Spector, as unbearably sad as the Smiths. At the centre of their infinitely bright star is a throbbing black mass of pain.

Because of the unassuming nature of the material itself the album was not critically appreciated upon its release, despite being a massive hit with audiences worldwide, as even pure brazen pop can be misunderstood but retrospectively can only be marveled at in how it defined so much of European pop to this day. Indeed, it was perhaps even impossible for critics to praise Arrival upon its release, it seemed destined to be proven worthwhile over time by its long-term influence on audiences.

Widely considered the Swedish foursome's first classic album - and historically important as the first to use the now-famous mirror-B logo - 1976's Arrival contains three huge hit singles, the dramatic "Money Money Money," the downcast "Knowing Me, Knowing You," and quite possibly the band's finest four minutes, the absolutely perfect pop classic "Dancing Queen," a. combination of Spector-ian grandeur, McCartney-esque melody, and the indescribable vocals of Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

Arrival is the fourth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA.

I own several copies of ABBA's ARRIVAL already on vinyl, cassette and CD so it would take something truly special for me to get excited about yet another reissue. Even this CD's "BONUS" tracks I already own, and although it's nice to have them included on one CD in remastered, this day and age of IPod makes such a hindrance of not having every song on one collection a moot point. A swedish special on ABBA's then upcoming album ARRIVAL. I own this special already on a poor quality bootleg but the difference here is not only the pristine quality of the special, but the fact that there are English subtitles.
