Manna/Mirage is a fusion music album recording by THE MUFFINS released in 1978 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. THE MUFFINS - Manna/Mirage.
This album, Manna/Mirage, has some great melodies interspersed throughout; in particular, "Monkey With The Golden Eyes" is a beautifully calming melodic piece, with a splendid coda. Hobart Got Burned" is burning Soft Machine 4 style jazz rock. Amelia Earhart" combines the energetic with the atmospheric, and "The Adventures Of Captain Boomerang" is a humorous, nostalgic epic. The/Manna/Mirage is one of the better progressive canterbury style type of American progressive rock albums. Amelia Ehart is really a fantastic piece of music. Tom Scott (from New Jersey) is fantastic, performing great band line work with a tight bass and drummer. The keyboards shine simply from the art of profientcy. When I bought this on vynil,I was drawn to the odvious parallel to The Soft Machine, Caravan or The Hatfield and the North but the recording is uniquely The Muffins' own style and musical signature.
Manna/Mirage was the Muffins' first album and remained their best work. It is a fantastic blend of Canterbury prog and Henry Cow-ish intricacy, with a soupçon of improvisation. Finally, "The Adventures of Captain Boomerang" (23 minutes) is a long complex suite, with a humorous touch not unlike some of National Health's material. Manna/Mirage would have become a classic prog album, if only it had come out of Canterbury instead of late-'70s . Since Cuneiform Records reissued it on CD in 1991, the album has enjoyed quite a bit of fame in progressive rock circles. 1 Monkey With the Golden Eyes The Muffins 4:2. 2 Hobart Got Burned The Muffins 5:59. 3 Amelia Earhart The Muffins 15:45.
