Hedningarna (The Heathens) is a Swedish and, for some years partly Finnish, folk music band that mixes electronics and rock with elements from old Scandinavian folk music. Their music features Yoik or juoiggus, a traditional Sami form of song. Hållbus Totte Mattson, Anders Stake and Björn Tollin formed Hedningarna in 1987. Hedning is Swedish for heathen, while ar is the plural suffix, and na is the definite article (thus hedningar ‘heathens’, hedningarna ‘the heathens’)
Too bad, because despite the inauthentic packaging, Fire is a hell of a good album. Hedningarna 's shtick is for the three Swedish men to play old-style Swedish instruments (fiddles, bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, et. while the two Finnish women wail away in that nation's distinctive style - and then to tweak the product towards the modern with all sorts of studio manipulations: self-sampling, compression, drum machine, roaring electric guitar. It's like going back in a time machine and finding Viking hordes with cell phones.

I usually listen to psych rock, 50s jazz and acid folk, but this was a whole new adventure. Sanna and Anita's vocals are simply incredible. The only comparison I can think of was from my childhood. A neighbor had pigeons and would let them out of their coop at sunset. I would watch them fly in intricate formations, weaving in and out of the flock. It was structured but at the same time it was totally spontaneous. That sums up the singing of Hedningarna.
