Christmas Day in Hong Kong involves shopping at the Mongkok Ladies Market, a symphony of lights at Winterfest and a giant replica of Noahs Ar. Hong Kong certainly isn't a traditional Christmas destination for American tourists, but nonetheless, the holiday is energetically celebrated by the city. And while there's no snow, you'll find plenty of festive spirit-lights strung across skyscrapers, turkey on every menu, and the song "White Christmas" booming from the city's speaker. If you find yourself wrapped up in the Chinese holiday hubbub, check out the insider track on Christmas events in Hong Kong.

It caused an outcry, as Hong Kong residents certainly believe theirs is a proper form of Chinese, and not just a dialect. The bureau was forced to apologise and delete the phrase. He cited the history of Cantonese in Guangdong province, where he believes efforts to spread Putonghua have been too successful, with children now not using their mother tongue. But Ms Chan of Hong Kong Polytechnic is less pessimistic. Contrary to what had been predicted, she says, Cantonese has maintained, and even extended, its dominant position after the handover in the areas of politics and law.

Demonstrators said that the Indian and Indonesian consulates refused to accept petitions. Pro-democracy and anti-extradition bill protesters staged a large rally in Central, Hong Kong, on June 26, with an explicit message for world leaders ahead of the G20 summit in Japan. Earlier in the day, demonstrators went from consulate to consulate petitioning G20 leaders to raise the issue of the bill at this year’s summit. Demonstrators wore T-shirts and carried placards with slogans like liberate Hong Kong and defend sovereignty in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong also hosts several styles of Lingnan (Cantonese) fine arts, including the Lingnan styles of painting and bonsai. For example, Yeung Sin Sum, who is venerated as "the last master of the Lingnan school of painting", is based (though not born) in Hong Kong. Cantonese opera also uses a distinct set of musical instruments. Hong Kong has made contributions in recent years with productions like A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation and DragonBlade. Most notably, companies like Imagi Animation Studios located directly in the territory are now pushing 3D-CG animations into the market.
