Wind is a world fusion music album recording by IBRAHIM MAALOUF released in 2012 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. Fifth album from the Lebanese trumpet player, and maybe his better-known – and certainly his most luxuriously packaged oeuvre, displaying photos of Joux’s multi-layered assemblage in steps, over a 36 page booklet along with a separate and a separate digibook-style disc holder, all housed in a cardboard box, almost the thickness of two jewel case CDs. This project was commissioned from the French film library (Cinémathèque), who wanted to reissue ancient silent films from the Albatross catalogue and put them to music.
Ibrahim Maalouf: Wind. February 16 2013, 12:01am, The Times. The last album by the Lebanese-born trumpeter skilfully - and gleefully - plundered global musical styles to make Diagnostic one of the year’s great records in that unhelpfully vague genre, world music. Wind has a tighter focus; it’s inspired by cool-school Miles Davis, specifically his soundtrack for Louis Malle’s Ascenseur pour l’échafaud. With an A-list of New York sidemen, Maalouf creates bittersweet tunes full of twilight tristesse
Mi'ster Productions). Paris-based Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf learned a Middle Eastern quarter-tone technique from his brass-playing father, started out winning classical competitions, and then taught himself jazz. This New York quintet session, including US star sidemen Mark Turner (sax) and Clarence Penn (drums), seems certain to broaden his audience. Maalouf has dedicated this album to Miles Davis, and it often uncannily echoes Sketches of Spain, but transformed in pitch by an Arabic influence.
