A rare copy of Prince's Black Album - one of the most sought-after vinyl records of all time - has been discovered in Canada. Conceived as hard funk riposte to his pop persona, and containing some of the star's darkest lyrics, the album was slated for release in 1987 before Prince had a "spiritual epiphany" and demanded it be destroyed. After hearing about the sums fetched by previous copies, he contacted Jeff Gold, a former Warner Bros executive vice president who worked with Prince in the 1990s, and now runs the music memorabilia store Record Mecca. I know a lot about Prince collectibles," Gold tells the BBC. "So I was like, 'How could you have a Canadian one? Such a thing doesn't exist!'"

Welcome to the party. It’s a warm March afternoon in southern California, and word has just hit the street that Prince is doing an impromptu secret show at the Hollywood Palladium. Fans have already started lining up on Sunset Boulevard, a full four hours.

However, the finished article was deemed too candid to print in full. The unexpurgated version is published here for the first time. His first free album, Emancipation, he says earned him more money after six months in the shops than any of his other albums for years, because he received so much more of the profits. One day I might write the book about the hardships artists face. It’s incredible that you write songs but don’t own the rights to them and someone else can do whatever they like with them.

A 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital role Prince played in other artists’ careers, Originals includes Prince's foundational recordings of hit songs like "Manic Monday," "The Glamorous Life," "Jungle Love," and more. Prince led the way, for artistic freedom, for ownership.

The prince has probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions. I’ve spent most of my life saying ‘I’m fine,’ Prince Harry says in a new interview with The Telegraph journalist Bryony Gordon on her mental health podcast Mad World. But, in fact, the prince reveals, his grief after Princess Diana’s death in 1997 triggered decades of mental health struggles that he’s only begun to deal with in the last three years. I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12 and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but also my work as well, Prince Harry says.
