Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have become a staple in the New Jersey music scene having released twelve studio albums since 1976 and featuring a rotating group of members such as Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and Steve Van Zandt. Soultime!, the first Jukes studio album since 2010's Pills and Ammo, is exactly what it says on the package. It's hard to imagine a stronger collection of vintage-sounding contemporary soul than this eleven-track release

R&B-fueled, horn-propelled tunes such as the driving "Cross That Line" and "Heartbreak City" could have been included on any of the Jukes' previous albums over the past 35 years. In Pills and Ammo he hits the sweet spot, producing a solid contemporary Jukes album that makes no compromises and should satisfy longtime fans, even if it might not create new ones.

While still tinged with the exuberant rhythm and blues feel that is the Jukes’ trademark, and loaded with the driving sound of the legendary Jukes horn section, this new CD has a sharper, guitar-oriented, rock and roll feel to it. A harder edge for harder times. But, as always, the sheer joy of making music is obvious throughout PILLS AND AMMO. PILLS AND AMMO, their new studio record released in June, 2010. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes are brassing their way full steam ahead the same way they always have, with no holds barred, good time rock and roll. I’ll stack my group against any group out there. We enjoy playing, and the audience enjoys having a good time. We distill it down to that.
