It is as valid a document of a concert as any live album ever release, and it has about 90 percent of the music that is on the remastering, and what music! - the versions of "Don't Be That Way," "Sing Sing Sing," and "One O'Clock Jump" alone are priceless (and arguably definitive, in the case of the first two. ), and they represent only a fraction of what's here. Thus, this set is not to be passed over, especially at the right price, for anyone who isn't an absolute Goodman fanatic.

The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert by Benny Goodman, Columbia Records catalogue item SL-160, is a two-disc LP of swing and jazz music recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938. First issued in 1950, the landmark recording captured the premiere performance given by a big band in the famed concert venue. The event has been described as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music.

Live at Carnegie Hall: 40th Anniversary Concert. Following closely on the heels of a bracing burst of vintage 1973 Maynard Ferguson (. 3, 4 & 5: Live at Jimmy's), Dutton's 2007 reissue of Benny Goodman's Live at Carnegie Hall 40th Anniversary Concert is more of a complete live recording than the 1990 CD reissue of the original LP. Taped on January 17, 1978, the concert mingled nostalgia and authentically solid swing music with a handful of obligatory concessions to '60s and '70s pop culture, in the form of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" and a couple of Beatles covers. Goodman's wistful reading of "Yesterday" is quaint enough, but being subjected to trumpeter Jack Sheldon's smarty pants vocal on "Rocky Raccoon" is a little like hearing Sebastian Cabot sing "It Ain't Me, Babe" only less funny.
