Loud novelties of the month.

The two songs are Love For Sale and Just One of Those Things and fit the album seamlessly. All the songs are recorded in mono and to my ears sound marvelous. Bottom line: no would could swing as hard or as effortlessly as Ella Fitzgerald. Her back-up band was more than up to the task: Paul Smith on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Gus Johnson on drums, and Wilfred Middlebrows on bass.

Recorded February 13, 1960 live at Deutschlandhalle, West Berlin, Germany. with The Paul Smith Quartet. Winner of 2 Grammy Awards in 1960. Matrix, Runout (Variant 1, Side A ): MV-2067A A-1-1 2N. Matrix, Runout (Variant 1, Side B ): MV-2067B A-1-1. Other (Price On back cover): ¥2,000. Rights Society: JASRAC.

This album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have "qualitative or historical significance. One of Fitzgerald's most acclaimed live performances, at this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald improvised lyrics for "Mack the Knife" after forgetting the original lyrics. In recognition of this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance (Single) and the Best Vocal Performance, Female (Album) at the 3rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Album · 1960 · 9 Songs. Fitzgerald was well into her stint on Verve in 1960, so it stands to reason that Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and the Gershwins-the focal points of her albums with producer Norman Granz-loomed large here. But while the songbooks boasted meticulous polish, Mack the Knife showed that Ella could still summon the visceral crackle of small-group jazz. Revisiting How High the Moon, her signature showpiece since the ’40s, she dials the tempo up to impossible.
