The Woodentops are a British rock band that enjoyed critical acclaim and moderate popularity in the mid-1980s. The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Paul Hookham (drums).

Night one of two, supporting the Primitives who I really liked. The Woodentops – Granular Tales (Cherry Red Records) CD/DL 24 February 2014 . /10. Original Indie rockers, The Woodentops, release their first album for twenty-five years. Louder Than War’s Paul Scott-Bates explains why it was worth the wait. I first became aware of The Woodentops in the mid-eighties with their landmark Giant album. They were the original Indie band, combining Afro-beat with a Balearic sound which was to become synonymous with them, and combining with electronica and funk. Their remixes probably introduced me to the delights of dub. Then to me, they disappeared.

The Woodentops played live periodically over the next several years, and in 2014 they returned with their first new album in over 25 years, Granular Tales. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
