Nine Inch Nails' second studio album, The Downward Spiral, entered the Billboard 200 at number two, and remains the highest-selling Nine Inch Nails release in the United States for shipments of over four million copies, in addition to selling five million copies worldwide. Influenced by late-1970s works by Pink Floyd and David Bowie, The Downward Spiral includes. With Teeth was released in May 2005, though it was leaked prior to its official release date. The album was written and recorded throughout 2004 following Reznor's battle with alcoholism and substance abuse and legal issues with his former manager, John Malm Jr. With Teeth debuted on top of the Billboard 200, Nine Inch Nails' second reign at number one with an album. The album's package lacks typical liner notes; instead it simply lists the names.
Nine Inch Nails second full-length studio album, The Downward Spiral (aka Halo 8) was created as a partially self-biographical tale about a man who was on a ‘downward spiral’ through depression to suicide. As with Halo 5, the album was recorded at 10050 Cielo Drive, the site Sharon Tate’s murder by the ‘Manson family’ in 1969. The house was converted into a record studio that Reznor called ‘Le Pig’, referencing when Susan Atkins wrote ‘Pig’ in Tate’s blood on the front door of the house. While I was working on Downward Spiral, I was living in the house where Sharon Tate was killed.
Not long after, thanks to inimitable singles like "Closer," the album became a surprise mainstream hit and against all odds now ranks as one of the decade's most commercially successful albums, as well as one of its most artistically enduring
Not only did he fully integrated the crashing metal guitars of Broken, but several newfound elements - expanded song structures, odd time signatures, shifting arrangements filled with novel sounds, tremendous textural variety - can be traced to the influence of progressive rock.
Nine Inch Nails have a reputation for making music that's a stereotype, and while they may lapse into that on other albums, on The Downward Spiral even the music that sounds basic has hidden layers of complexity. Hell, on Heresy, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is quoted in Reznor's scream of "God is dead," which turns out to be so important to the album. Although The Downward Spiral is splenetic and furious, everyone can identify with it on some level. We may not like to admit it, but the way in which we propelled this album into the upper echelons of popular culture speaks louder than our words. Closer is great, though. And I don't need to mention how much Hurt owns. I need to get me some o' dat With Teeth. As for Med, great work. You get an enthusiastic thumbs up.
