They were the band concept of innovative drummer Bill Curtis that wished to merge the "fatback" jazz beat of New Orleans into a funk band. They had seminal hits like "(Do The) Spanish Hustle", "I Like Girls", "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)", and "Backstrokin'". Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is sometimes considered the first hip hop single.

Rhythm is a dancer; it's a souls companion People feel it everywhere Lift your hands and voices; free your mind and join us You can feel it in the air. Oh oh, it's a passion Oh oh, you can feel it in the air Oh oh, it's a passion Oh oh, oh, oh, oh. (This is the rhythm) You can put some joy up on my face Oh, sunshine in an empty place Take me too, turn to And babe, I'll make you stay. This is the rhythm of my life My life Oh, yeah The rhythm of my life. Won't you teach me how to love and learn? There'll be nothing left for me to yearn Think of me and burn And let me hold your hand. I don't want to face the world in tears Please think again, I'm on my knees Sing that song to me No reason to repent.

Rhythm of the Night is the fourth studio album by DeBarge, released by Gordy Records on March 14, 1985. It reached on the Billboard 200 and on the R&B Album Chart. The album was also certified Platinum by the RIAA. DeBarge continued their success streak with their third album, 1983's In a Special Way. They went back into the studio to record what became Rhythm of the Night.

Predominantly an R&B-based funk outfit, many claim their "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" was the first rap record.
