Songs Without Words was produced at the end of 1969 under the aegis of Peter Eden (who produced several early Westbrook records for the Deram label), on the condition, imposed by Chris Spedding, that if he didn't like the finished product it wouldn't be released. So it was shelved after the recording, probably because Spedding wanted to launch a solo career in rock and this was, essentially a jazz album. Oddly though, the album did see a release in Japan, on the Odeon (1970) and EMI labels (1971)

Producer – Chris Spedding, Peter Eden. With OBI Strip - Progressive Rock Series. booklet contains liner notes in Japanese.

guitar hero Chris Spedding has worked with practically everyone, from Brian Eno and John Cale to Cleo Laine and the Wombles, and at the age of 70 he's still picking up a storm and full of rock & roll attitude, as demonstrated on his 2015 solo effort Joyland, his first album under his own name in six years.

Chris Spedding (born Peter Robinson 17 June 1944) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, t, composer, and record producer. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Spedding is best known for his studio session work; and, by the early-1970's, he had become one of the most sought-after session guitarists in England, meaning that Spedding has played on and produced countless albums, and singles. We Winfree kids often bought records for each other as presents, and I guess my tastes were already getting tough to read. My sister Julie Winfree (now Julie W. Kovasckitz) told me that she went to the local record store and asked them what album was the most "b-e-e-a-a-r-r-r-w, in the store. In case you can't figure that out, that is my cruddy impression of a loud guitar all spelled out as best I can. It was often just shortened to "bow wow" music.

The Very Best of Chris Spedding. The Very Best of Chris Spedding is the fifth greatest hits compilation album by Chris Spedding, released on 5 September 2005. It contains his best-known solo songs as well as those he recorded with the Vibrators. Rock and Roll Band" - Chris Spedding's New Band. Don't Leave Me". "Motor Bikin'". Working for the Union". New Girl in the Neighbourhood".

Spedding pursued a solo career and released his debut album Songs Without Words in 1970. Since then, he has released fourteen studio albums, and two live albums  . Whilst still with the Battered Ornaments, which without the departing Pete Brown left Spedding as their frontman, he joined the Frank Ricotti Quartet, and played guitar on the album Our Point of View, released in July 1969 Spedding then recorded his own instrumental album, Songs Without Words (1970) for Harvest Records, which was only released in Japan. During this time he was also playing jazz with Nucleus and recorded and toured with Mike Gibbs.
