Both Lights can best be characterized as a lustrous, though schizophrenic, shred album. And such signs of aberrant behavior are discrete from its very beginning. A blast of paranoid drumming and trembling guitar riffing heralds a coiling melody, reinforced by several keyboard layers, bagpipes and saxophone leads – this is how "Epic", the album's starter builds some tension. Soon the second blast will kick in, but Luke Wyland, the principal songwriter, knows that such a storm is always followed- and fueled also- by a calm. Both Lights at times feels swallowed by its loud trumpeting and indomitable stylistic range. But Both Lights is neither a product of maturity nor a random attempt of some fake avant-garde wannabes.

On Both Lights, AU blends minimalist impulses with dramatic pop dynamics and flavor. It's the recipe for some great songs, but an inconsistent album experience. At a mere 40 minutes and change, Both Lights is still practically too much for one sitting. On AU's third album, the Portland, Oregon duo charges through a schizo array of compositions at such an unintuitive pace that it never quite satisfies as a whole. Song for song, part for part, Luke Wyland and Dana Valatka and assorted guest performers are so on top of their instrumental game that it's hard to knock them for a little hyperactivity.

Anthem Lights is the debut album by the American Christian pop band, Anthem Lights. The album was released on May 10, 2011 on Reunion Records and contains all three tracks from their self-titled EP, which was released on February 1, 2011.

70. Here is a group that doesn't seem to know where it fits; it can't decide whether it wants to rack itself freak-folk, or avant-noise, or post-rock, or even neo-classical.

Label: Hometapes/The Leaf Label. Setting off at a vigorous pace with the fittingly named Epic, Au’s first release since 2008′s Verbs, Both Lights, is symphonic in nature. The album boasts fully instrumental tracks, hyper-symphonic pop songs and captivating soundscapes, all arranged in a fashion as if they belong next to one another. And what really holds this whole album together is found in the esoteric synth sounds in each arrangement. Also contributing to this congruence are Wyland’s own vocals, simultaneously bright and dark, and often backed by a choir of female voices. All in all, what grounds each track to the other.

Thirty seconds into Both Lights, the third full-length offering from Portland experimentalists AU, you're already reeling, and then - suddenly - the sensory bombardment stops. A momentary pause, then a thunderous, buzzing bass-line heralds a cacophonous return; more keyboard arpeggios, then brass and a brief blast of saxophone. The album finishes with a four-song suite that runs the gamut of AU's stylistic range, starting with the manic thrash of 'Why I Must' and the beautiful, shimmering ‘Go Slow’ before moving on to ‘Old Friend’, a stripped-down piano ballad featuring an understated Winchester lead vocal and closer ‘Don't Lie Down’, a slow-burning stew of crackling, acid-fried.

Its self-titled debut album was praised by such media centers as Pitchfork and Stereogum, and was named Portland Album of 2007 by The Portland Mercury, which said AU manages to erase the high art/low art boundary between American contemporary classical music and American pop music, blending them into a simple, compelling, verse-chorus celebration. and) is the rare band that.
