Clarification of the textures is paramount here, and the 12-voice adult and mixed-gender Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal brilliantly succeeds. The music under the direct influence of the conservative Council of Trent is sung a cappella, but later works use a small continuo of cello, theorbo, and positive organ.

Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM), Christopher Jackson. The Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM), a group of 13 to 18 professional singers, is accompanied here by cello, organ, and theorbo. While specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music, SMAM is also known for performances of contemporary music. Christopher Jackson co-founded SMAM in 1974, and has been its artistic director since 1988.

Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarie (Judith triumphant over the barbarians of Holofernes), RV 644, is an oratorio by Antonio Vivaldi, the only survivor of the four that he is known to have composed. Although the rest of the oratorio survives completely intact, the overture has been lost. The Latin libretto was written by Iacopo Cassetti based upon the Book of Judith.

STUDIO DE MUSIQUE ANCIENNE DE MONTRÉAL Roma Triumphans: Ten of the dozen pieces here are motets, usually unaccompanied choral works meant to be performed during or immediately after holy communion during Christian mass. These richly polytonal works (most from the early- and mid-17th century, all written for use inside the Vatican) are also polychoral, which means the singers are divided into groups that alternately sing with and against each other. The 16 tracks on this album span the work of John Dunstable (1390-1453) to Healey Willan (1880-1968), with the meat coming from Baroque masters such as Schütz and Purcell. There is also a gorgeous instrumental Passacaglia for viols by Marin Marais. Hearing the 20th-century pieces with only one voice per part gives them a compelling edge compared to the usual round, big-choir sound.

Early music vocal ensemble the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal presents Orlando di Lasso's Laudate Dominum, dedicated to the memory of Christopher Jackson, the group's founder and first director. Jackson launched this project as a concert in March 2015, although he died of cancer in September that same year before he could record the pieces. British chorus master Andrew McAnerney, Jackson's successor as SMAM artistic director, stepped in to complete Jackson's work and leads the choir on their first album together. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – ATMA Classique Studio Masters.
