Changes is a jazz album released by Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock in 1984. This group subsequently became known as the "Standards Trio". The album features improvised compositions recorded at the same sessions as the two volumes released as Standards. In 2008 the three albums were collected into a boxed set, Setting Standards: New York Sessions.

In January 1983, Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette came together with producer Manfred Eicher for an extraordinary recording session at New York’s Power Station. The idea – almost revolutionary in an era when the idea of playing ‘original material’ was all-important - was a modest one: to simply make an album of jazz standards. Gary Peacock: We went in to do just one album but we came out with enough material for three albums. The result: the album Changes. Three top flight albums recorded – and mixed – in two and a half days. Not only that, the musicians had mapped out the area – from the Great American Songbook to free play – that they would continue to explore for the next quarter-century, making them perhaps the most widely-admired jazz group in the world today, and easily the most popular contemporary piano trio.
The former is a 19-plus-minute extravaganza that begins in halting, shimmering beauty and gets stripped to its essentials before being reconstructed and reshaped from building blocks into the driving, hypnotic improvisational ostinato coda Jarrett calls "Everywhere," with breathtaking chord voicings, forceful, middle-register bass flourishes, and awe-inspiring tom-tom and cymbal work by DeJohnette; the track's conclusion is drenched.
It's a terrific start to an album that, recorded in Switzerland during the summer of 2009, celebrates 30 years since Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette first entered New York's Power Station studio for the fruitful sessions that yielded three recordings collected on Setting Standards: New York Sessions (ECM, 2008): Standards, Vol. 1 (1983), Changes. 1984) and Standards, Vol. 2 (1985).
Changes Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette. Unlike the other two Keith Jarrett trio recordings from January 1983, this collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette does not feature standards. The trio performs the 30-minute 'Flying' and a 6-minute 'Prism,' both of them Jarrett originals. Flying,' which has several sections, keeps one's interest througout while the more concise 'Prism' has a beautiful melody. It is a nice change to hear Jarrett (who normally plays unaccompanied) interacting with a trio of superb players.
Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette have announced the forthcoming release of their 2CD live concert set After The Fall on 2 March through ECM. A live recording from 1998, After The Fall finds the dextrous and highly-acclaimed trio performing some of the best-loved jazz standards in their own inimitable style.
