The Soil & The Sun become more intentional, more powerful, and more humbling each album. On Meridian, a growing use of digital soundscapes and effects complement their previous mastery of wood, wire and air instrumentation. Lyrically, the group continues with their prophetic substance under an approachable veil. Alex and co. call out evil by name on "Samyaza," beg for peace on "How Long,"and bring the listener to joy in mystery on "Are You?"
On this release, the septet covers a lot of ground. From the almost orchestral backing vocals on How Long to the dynamic and unpredictable rhythms of Leviathan, the Soil & the Sun never seem to want to settle down, preferring to mesh competing sounds to craft an expansive collage. Meridian is about life and death, mystery, love, selfishness, God, technocracy, sorrow, the end of the world, and the fate of mankind, songwriter Alex McGrath says.
