Her upcoming album Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John (out April 13 via American Laundromat Records) is perhaps even bolder. As the title explains, the record features Hatfield’s renditions of 13 Olivia Newton-John classics, and is blissfully free of irony. Her loving takes on songs like Hopelessly Devoted To You and Physical are done with joy and care. The arrangements and instrumentation are tweaked to fit Hatfield’s singing voice and aesthetic, but otherwise, she hews closely to the original material, basking in their heartfelt glow and romantic idealism.
Olivia Newton-John (exec. Charles Fisher, Richard Marx, Rick Nowels. Olivia Newton-John chronology. 2) is the nineteenth studio album by Australian pop singer Olivia Newton-John, released on 12 November 2002 in Australia. A duets album, the majority of tracks are with Australian artists, along with two American performers (Richard Marx and Michael McDonald). The Peter Allen and Johnny O'Keefe duets are built around archive recordings, with new vocals added by Newton-John.

Once Olivia Newton-John became well established in American pop music in the mid-70's, she entered the exclusive circle of the top female singers of our time, right up there with Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Bette Midler and Dionne Warwick. Once you reach these heights, a new album doesn't prompt the question "Is she a good singer?" but rather "Is the material good, and was the vision for the recording successfully realized?" For me, the answer for this collection is "Yes".
Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John mostly covers the late '70s/early '80s hit-making period of Newton-John when she made the transition from country music ingenue to mainstream rock/pop star (a career turn that Taylor Swift similarly followed decades later). Applying her own signature indie rock sound with a fresh spin, Hatfield infuses new life not only on many of Newton-John's classic hits for the album but also unearths some deep cuts, such as "Make a Move on Me", "Totally Hot", and "Suspended in Time".
