Astrud Gilberto owns a distinctive voice, an emotive instrument, when coupled with the right material, that's captivating. Why did she sing all those classic JOBIM songs? It's because this was the lead instrument Jobim chose for GIRL FROM IPENEMA, HOW INSENSITIVE, and all those classics. Having those instrumentals with Turrentine playing soul sax, help to give the album some natural space, the way jazz bands often had their singers only featured on occasional numbers. I wouldnt recommend this as a first purchase, to discover Astrud's voice. Naturally, that album would be GETZ/GILBERTO, or even GETZ AU GO GO, so you can hear all the Jobim classics, west coast COOL SCHOOL Getz, meets Brazilian Bossa Nova Jobim and Gilberto. But dont write her off, after the Bossa Nova craze went bust, and fusion became the IN sound of the 70s.
