Before reading Austin Allen’s illuminating poem guide, talk about what might be going on in The Emperor of Ice-Cream. Ask students basic questions like: where is the poem set? What is happening?

The Emperor of Ice-Cream Learning Guide by PhD students from Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley. Ice cream is so tasty and wonderful, there should be an emperor of it, right? This is sort of what Wallace Stevens is getting at in his poem, "The Emperor of Ice-Cream," first published in 1923. The technical and serious stuff, according to Stevens, is often silly and not worth fussing over

The Emperor of Ice-Cream (novel). The Emperor of Ice-Cream is a 1965 coming-of-age novel by writer Brian Moore. Set in Belfast during the Second World War, the book tells the story of 17-year-old Gavin Burke, from a Nationalist Catholic family, who joins the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) over his father's objections. Based in part on Moore's own wartime experiences, he described it as the most autobiographical of his novels. Its title is taken from Wallace Stevens' poem "The Emperor of Ice-Cream".

The Emperor of Ice Cream, also called the roller of big cigars, is the one who enjoys all of life and takes every pleasure from it he can. He is described as muscular, proud, and strong; it is almost implied, by the end of each stanza, that he is to be imitated. Another character is the unnamed woman who has just died and whose funeral it is. The woman lived a life of extreme poverty (evident from her dresser made of cheap wood that was missing three knobs).
