Feral, stray, and pet cats are all members of the same species; they are all domestic cats. But stray cats and feral cats are also different from each other in a very important way-in their relationship to and interactions with people.

The main distinguishing difference between feral and stray cats is simply the way they relate to and interact with humans. A stray cat has been socialized at some point in her life but has lost or left the human contact and dependence that come with having a home. Even though a stray cat can be scared and wary, she may be able to be adopted into another home under the right circumstances and with patience. Occasionally, a stray cat may become feral if she is without human contact for an extended period of time  . How will they act differently? You can learn a lot by observing the ways cats act with you and with each other. A stray cat may approach you or allow you to touch her. A feral cat will keep a safe distance and flee if you initiate contact. A stray cat will probably live alone.

Feral populations of crop plants, along with hybridization between crop plants and their wild relatives, brings a risk that genetically engineered characteristics such as pesticide resistance could be transferred to weed plants. The unintended presence of genetically modified crop plants or of the modified traits in other plants as a result of cross-breeding is known as "adventitious presence (AP)". Some species will detach readily from humans and pursue their own devices, but do not stray far or spread readily. Others depart and are gone, seeking out new territory or range to exploit and displaying active invasiveness. Whether they leave readily and venture far, the ultimate criterion for success is longevity. Other isolated feral populations exist, including the Chincoteague Pony and the Banker horse. They are often referred to as "wild horses", but this is a misnomer.

Stray cats are cats that have gotten lost, but have been socialized and need humans to care for them (at least marginally). There are many strays that get lost as older kittens or young adults that can appear to be feral when approached or caught due to natural fear of unknown large animals (people) and have to be re-socialized. Cats are often fearful of people that they don’t know since they are a small animal that is preyed upon by larger mammals. Because of this, it can be hard to tell the difference between stray and feral cats when approaching them
