Colin Vearncombe (26 May 1962 – 26 January 2016), known by his stage name Black, was an English singer-songwriter. He emerged from the punk rock music scene and achieved mainstream pop success in the late 1980s, most notably with the 1986 single "Wonderful Life", which was an international hit the next year

Colin Vearncombe was a Liverpool-born singer-songwriter for whom his biggest successes were also his most problematic works. Recorded under his regular pseudonym of Black, he had just two hit singles, both in 1987; Sweetest Smile and Wonderful Life were both UK top ten hits, with the latter a huge success across Europe

Colin Vearncombe was born in the West Derby area of Liverpool in 1962 and went to Prescot Grammar School. He saw Deaf School at the new wave club, Eric's, in 1977 and wanted to be a performer himself. He went to art college and played with the Epileptic Tits. It was a stupid name for a stupid band but I knew I wanted to play original material. Black released two singles for Warners but they then dropped him. We’ll tell you what’s true.
