Thomas Tallis - Lamentations. CD3 - 2. –Thomas Tallis.
The Tallis Scholars is a British professional early music vocal ensemble normally consisting of two singers per part, with a core group of ten singers. They specialise in performing a cappella sacred vocal music. The group was formed in 1973 by Peter Phillips, who in 1972-1975 was an organ scholar at St John's College, Oxford and studied music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold.
The third of three volumes featuring The Tallis Scholars' finest recordings, one for each decade, and each offering over five hours of the award-winning performances that helped establish Renaissance Polyphony as one of the great repertoires of western classical music.
The collection seems to be intended as a crossover-friendly collection of Tallis Scholars recordings, offering lots of small snippets that you might indeed hear on the radio more often than you would, say, a complete Josquin mass. As such, it's very nice. The opening truncation of Allegri's Miserere, which loses its last 12 verses, gets things off to an uneasy start; it would have been better to simply leave the piece off. But after that the double album is a kaleidoscopic sequence of great moments in Renaissance music, and it's very easy on the ears.
An early music ensemble is a musical ensemble that specializes in performing early music of the European classical tradition from the Baroque era and earlier - broadly, music produced before about 1750. Tallis Scholars (Peter Phillips): a cappella Renaissance music. Taverner Consort and Players (Andrew Parrott): renaissance choir and baroque orchestra. Theatre of Voices: vocal consort.
The Tallis Scholars are almost as great on this CD as they are in person. The clarity of the voices makes the intertwining of the voices a thing of beauty and definitely a joy forever. This is a fantastic set of four CDs, the second of three released by the Tallis Scholars to mark 30 years of recordings. Volume 2 is a selection from the 1990s, and genuinely does represent some of their finest recordings - which from the Tallis Scholars is really saying something. The track listings on this page give a good summary of the works included I have owned and loved all of the original discs from which these recordings are taken for many years, and together they form a magnificent set.

The second volume of The Tallis Scholars sing Tudor Church Music shows how this characteristically English sound developed in the high renaissance, a picture which is amplified and brought to a conclusion in The Tallis Scholars sing Thomas Tallis and The Tallis Scholars sing William Byrd. The sheer length of these five antiphons shows that something unusual is happening; and then one notices the scorings, each different from the last. Zum Kernrepertoire der Tallis Scholars gehörte schon immer die englische Sakralmusik des 16. Jahrhunderts.
