After creating a nearly perfect debut album, Kate & Anna McGarrigle had the unenviable task of trying to make lighting strike in the same place a second time, and on 1977's Dancer with Bruised Knees, the sisters seemed to be making a very deliberate effort to try something that felt different while still reflecting their very distinct personality. And for the most part, they succeeded; Dancer with Bruised Knees is more willfully idiosyncratic than the McGarrigles first LP, with the same blend of lovely, folky melodies and all but flawless harmonies alongside a set of songs that build.
Kate McGarrigle (February 6, 1946 – January 18, 2010) and Anna McGarrigle (born December 4, 1944) were a duo of Canadian singer-songwriters from Quebec, who performed until Kate McGarrigle's death on January 18, 2010. In the 1960s, in Montreal, while Kate was studying engineering at McGill University and Anna art at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, they began performing in public and writing their own songs.
The heights that I reached were dangerous And I saw my partner strain And felt when I had landed His strength was on the wane.
Dancer With Bruised Knees. Dancer With Bruised Knees. The songs on Kate and Anna McGarrigle's second album suffer only when compared to the impossible bounty achieved with their self-titled debut two years earlier. The performances, however, are every bit as charming, and the arrangements extend a wise, winsome balancing act between their angelic harmonies and the vulnerable, unvarnished feel of their solos, while the best songs achieve a similar poise in matching art song ambition to folk earthiness. by Kate & Anna McGarrigle - 12 Tracks - 41:06.
