Shades is the sixth album by J. Cale, released in 1981. After years of living and recording in Nashville, Cale relocated to California in 1980 and lived in an Anaheim trailer park but continued working with longtime producer Audie Ashworth. Shades, which continued Cale’s tradition of giving his albums one word titles, was recorded in various studios in Nashville and Los Angeles.

Johnson and Kai Winding had two reunions on A&M LPs in 1968; they had led a very popular two-trombone quintet during 1954-56 before going their separate ways. This date is a bit commercial, with a small string section and woodwinds utilized on five of the nine numbers. Still, the beautiful tones of the co-leaders make this a worthwhile set with the highlights including "My Funny Valentine," "Israel," "St. James Infirmary," and "Django.
