Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 prior to the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk (1991). Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records

Green Day were pioneers of the mid-1990's punk revival. With their 2004 album American Idiot they reasserted their role as one of the most innovative of all punk bands. These are their 11 studio albums. It is the only Green Day album featuring John Kiffmeyer on drums. It was initially released on black vinyl and later approximately 800 copies were pressed on green vinyl. In its first year, the album sold approximately 3,000 copies, a good showing for the young indie label. After Dookie became a hit in 1994, sales for 39/Smooth climbed over 55,000. The album is now out of print, but the songs were later included on a compilation titled 1,039, Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.

The 2004 album, American Idiot, was number one on the Billboard charts, the band's first ever album to top the chart, even with success of the album's first single, "American Idiot. Through 2005, the band toured for about 150 days- visiting Japan, Australia, South America and the UK, where they had a crowd of 130,000 people in only two days. These recordings were released as a live CD and DVD called Bullet in a Bible on November 15, 2005. The DVD had a behind-the-scenes footage of the band, and showed how the band prepared to put on the show. Green Day live in Germany during the American Idiot tour. In 2006, Green Day won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" which spent 16 weeks at the number one position of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks.
