Wanda Landowska was born in Warsaw, where her father was a lawyer, and her mother a linguist who translated Mark Twain into Polish. She began playing piano at the age of four, and studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with Kleczynski and Michalowski. She also studied composition with Heinrich Urban in Berlin. After marrying the Polish folklorist Henry Lew in 1900 in Paris, she taught piano at the Schola Cantorum there (1900-1912). A number of important new works were written for her: Manuel de Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro marked the return of the harpsichord to the modern orchestra. Falla later wrote a harpsichord concerto for her, and Francis Poulenc composed his Concert champêtre for her. Wanda Landowska established the École de Musique Ancienne at Paris in 1925: from 1927, her home in Saint-Leu became a center for the performance and study of old music.
From: Wanda Landowska. The Landowska Recordings: . Bach Three Part Inventions: No. 14 in B flat major, BWV 800. 15 in B minor, BWV 801. 13 in A minor, BWV 799. 11 in G minor, BWV 797. Bach: Fantasia in C minor, BWV 906. 1 in C major, BWV 787.
In a way, Landowska was one of the originators of the entire ce movement; she was the first person to insist that Bach's non-organ keyboard works should be played on the harpsichord. Yet her Bach performances bore little resemblance to what soon after her death would be considered authentic performances; her Pleyel harpsichord was a loud, complicated thing, with lots of different manuals and stops, and it did not resemble any harpsichord of Bach's time in the least.
Wanda Landowska (Harpsichord, Piano). Born: July 5, 1879 - Warsaw, Poland Died: August 16, 1959 - Lakeville, Connecticut, USA. Wanda Landowska was a Polish harpsichordist whose performances, teaching, recordings and writings played a large role in reviving the popularity of that instrument in the early 20th century. She was the first person to record . Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) on the harpsichord (1931). Wanda Landowska was born in Warsaw, where her father was a lawyer, and her mother a linguist who translated Mark Twain into Polish
A harpsichord concerto is a piece of music for an orchestra with the harpsichord in a solo role (though for another sense, see below). Sometimes these works are played on the modern piano (see piano concerto). For a period in the late 18th century, Joseph Haydn and Thomas Arne wrote concertos that could be played interchangeably on harpsichord, fortepiano, and (in some cases) pipe organ. With the harpsichord revival in the 20th century, harpsichordists commissioned new pieces for the new 'revival' instrument: Wanda Landowska commissioned concerti from Francis Poulenc and Manuel de Falla. Though the 'revival instruments' have now fallen out of favour, concerti continue to be written for harpsichord, though are now more likely to be played on a copy of a historical instrument, perhaps with a small orchestra or some amplification to ensure it can be well heard.
