As We Travel, the follow-up to the Harmless label's excellent Make Music comp, may be better than its predecessor, assembling an even more perfectly nuanced collection of spacious, mellow soul cuts from the early '70s. Unified by their acoustic guitars, gently bubbling basslines, and sweetly funky rhythms, these dozen songs come together to create a ravishingly beautiful mood perfect for Sunday morning listening - the subtitle, Folk Funk Flavours & Ambient Soul, speaks volumes about the scope and effect of the grooves therein.
As We Travel - Folk Funk Flavours & Ambient Soul (2xLP, Comp).
Format: Audio CD. Make Music was the first volume in Harmless's Folk Funk Flavours series, and even though it was a great CD, I think As We Travel is even better. Starting off with Shuggie Otis's "Strawberry Letter 23" and finishing with the Meters's melancholy (but wah-wah guitar-employing) remake of Neil Yong's "Birds," the CD is one of the best I've ever come across. Like Make Music, As We Travel showcases forgotten music from the early.

There's a Riot Goin' On is the fifth studio album by American funk and psychedelic soul band Sly and the Family Stone. It was recorded from 1970 to 1971 at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California and released later that year on November 20 by Epic Records. The album's recording was dominated by band frontman Sly Stone during a period of drug use and intra-group tension
