Die Dreigroschenoper, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's radical reinterpretation of John Gay's eighteenth century operetta The Beggar's Opera, was a sensation in Europe after its German premiere in 1928. But the show, with its decadent portrait of the underworld, was less appealing to Americans when it appeared as The Threepenny Opera on Broadway in 1933 and became a quick flop. It took another 21 years and a new English adaptation by Marc Blitzstein for The Threepenny Opera to succeed in New York.

by Bertolt Brecht/Kurt Weill. Created and premiered at Berliner Ensemble in 1928, "The Threepenny Opera" is a caustic market analysis. On the one side, there is big business, represented by the scrupulous entrepreneur Peachum, and on the other, there is Mack the Knife, the infamous anarchic villain: What is the robbing of a bank compared to the founding of a bank? Jonathan Peachum runs a flourishing trade, providing outfits for beggars. His dealings with the "poorest of the poor" could not be more profitable

What Keeps Mankind Alive?" is a song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their music drama The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) which premiered in Berlin in 1928 at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. The title refers to the central line from the finale of act 2, Denn wovon lebt der Mensch?. In the opera, the two stanzas of the strophic piece are sung by Macheath and Mrs Peachum and the final line is sung in fortissimo by the chorus.
